Medical Marijuana Users in Margate May Soon Score Dope Next Door. County Commissioners Hear the Matt
Living in a City that outlawed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs) at the close of 2017, Margate residents prescribed cannabis by a doctor for pain or otherwise treatment will need to travel a few doors down to score. _______________ Between Coconut Creek’s Overlay District located nearby, and the potential for MMTCs in nearby unincorporated parts of Broward County, copping medical dope should be easy to obtain for patient’s living inside Margate’s nine-square mile city limit. Coconut Creek’s Medical Services Overlay Area was passed by that City in May last year and the first of two public hearings on allowing Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTC) in areas of unincorporated Broward County is on the County Commission Agenda for Tuesday January 9, 2018 (item #26). Though Margate contains no unincorporated areas (in white on map), numerous are located to the north in Coconut Creek and Parkland and likely will see growth in the industry. The county ordinance allows for three types of MMTCs: cultivation facilities, processing facilities and dispensing facilities. The ordinance is clear that cultivation facilities are not farms, but rather indoor grow houses. Though none have officially opened in Coconut Creek, the interest level is high, say officials. After multiple moratoriums on MTCCs and then tentative approval in November 2017, elected officials in Margate held a separate meeting in December to ban MTCCs altogether in the City. The vote went 3-2 in favor of the ban with Vice Mayor, Anthony Caggiano, and Commissioner, Lesa Peerman in dissent. The two sided with more than 70 percent of Margate voters who cast ballots to legalize medical pot in November 2016. Three others were concerned about market proliferation, past problems with ‘pain mills’ in Margate, and the lack of revenues MTCCs would generate for taxpayers. Notwithstanding, to send cannabis consumers packing to another city for pot is to send same elsewhere to shop, dine and for personal and professional services. Though an overwhelming number of Margate, Broward County and Florida voters favored medical marijuana on the ballot, state law allows for home rule by municipalities looking to ban MTCCs.
